President Obama recorded a special message to Jay Z, the first rapper inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, noting, “I’m pretty sure I’m still the only president to listen to Jay Z’s music in the Oval Office.”

Greetings! Our GBE Black Music Month 2017 opens with a salute to the gentle genius Curtis Mayfield, who would have been 75 this year. Mayfield’s talent created the soundtrack of the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s, climaxing with his critically acclaimed “New World Order,” recorded while he was paralyzed.
