Former Child Soldier Shares Story With Middle Schoolers
With the help of the U.S. Fund for UNICEF, hundreds of middle schoolers from around New York City joined Michel Chikwanine, a former child soldier from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, to talk about his experience and the plight of thousands of children that are often kidnapped and forced into the ranks of warring parties worldwide. Despite the international call to end the practice, the Obama Administration received criticism when it announced this October that it would continue to waive sanctions against countries like the D.R.C. and Yemen - countries where children are still being used as soldiers.
