The state government is making it easier for low-income community college students who are taking career and technical education classes to obtain federally-funded Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits, formerly known as food stamp benefits.
There are more than 200,000 community college students enrolled statewide and many come from very low-income families and struggle against hunger.
A survey by Temple University’s Hope Center for College, Community and Justice found that nearly half of community college students nationwide had trouble obtaining sufficient food in the 30 days prior to the survey.
