Kicking off American Heart Month on the 1st of February, the members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated, Eta Omega Omega Chapter and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated, Bronx Alumnae Chapter hosted their annual joint event, “Pink goes Red.” From 10 a.m. to noon in the Forest Gym located at 955 Tinton Avenue, in the Bronx, the event served to help community members, “Get Active, Get Healthy.”
The Pink goes Red event has been running for six years and gives the community a space to learn more about heart health. “It is two sororities coming together and wanting to do more for the community,” said Stephannia Cleaton, the Eta Omega Omega Chapter public relations chair. Open to the public, guests were encouraged to wear red, which represented the American Heart Association and their strive for a healthy heart.
Over 200 people attended which surpassed last year’s 150 attendance. The event included staple activities for all ages like Zumba, self-defense classes, health and nutrition tips, and the popular complimentary blood pressure and glucose screenings. “It is always good to have blood pressure screenings because not everyone gets that checked. High blood pressure is a silent killer,” said Cleaton.
For next year’s Pink goes Red event, Cleaton hopes that it will be even more exciting and interactive for people of all ages. “Heart health is important in the community. This is something to inspire people to get healthy,” Cleaton said.
