Talking SCHOP! Staying safe AT HOME

First and foremost, I speak for the entire city in thanking the healthcare professionals for all of the selfless work they are doing to treat those infected and other infirmed patients. We raise you up. Thank you to essential city workers who are removing trash, keeping clean water flowing through our faucets, electricity pumping through our homes, protecting our streets and restaurant and grocery store workers who are our lifeline, literally. We humbly thank you.
There is so much to unpack about what all is happening. Honestly, I would rather keep it in the suitcase, seal it with duct tape, put it outside, grab a pint of ice cream and Netflix-and-chill until this is all over. If I did not have my two faithful dogs, you would not see me in these streets at all until it was safe.
I have been cooking, trying to use what I have to limit my trips to the grocery store. I am finding it to be good therapy and, thanks to social media (mark those words), a great way of connecting and communicating with others through food. It is what I do, but this experience has put a whole new light on it.
I am so glad I panic shopped when I did weeks ago. That list I provided in this column two weeks ago was what I stocked in my house. On the stocking list was a whole chicken. It was one of the first things I made. It is a staple, gives that homey, “made with love” type of feel whose bounty I can stretch over days. Surprisingly, the simple roasted chicken was the spark to ignite friends from California to Barbados and in Harlem too to get on the good foot and make it happen. (Get the recipe below!)
Now, I know like most of you, I am missing some of my favorite eats during this time but most are still open with modified menus and safe and contactless delivery. We must do our part to help support these businesses by ordering when possible for yourself, a neighbor, a family member or a friend. And give a nice tip too! As I mentioned first, these are essential workers in these surreal times.
