Agility Boot Camp

Former First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! public health program aimed to reduce childhood obesity and inspire children to adopt a healthy lifestyle. According to research from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Minority Health, 21 percent of Black children ages 6-11 were obese compared to 13 percent of white children. Black girls were 50 percent more likely to be obese than white girls. If you’re wondering what to do with your kids and teens this summer, put fitness at the top of the list.

Start what you hope will continue, with a summer vacation that leans heavy on fitness for young people. Consider these ideas for fun and fitness.

JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort & Spa, San Antonio, Texas

See if your kid is indeed an American Ninja Warrior. Children ages 5 to 16 can participate in the Agility Boot Camp, geared toward children aged 5 to 16. The Speed Killz Period Training is a group that has trained many of Texas’ D1 Athletes. Their trainers oversee activities focused on speed and movement to enhance neuromuscular control and flexibility. In addition there is yoga on the lawn, yard games, hill country hiking and biking trails, an award-winning 26,000 square-foot spa, five main dining options, and more. The River Bend Water Experience offers four swimming pools, two hot tubs, five water slides, two body slides and a 1,100-foot-long lazy river. On top of all that, there is a beach.

Fairmont Southampton, Southampton, Bermuda

In just over two hours you can be in Bermuda. The entire family will enjoy getting their toes in the pink sand. At the Fairmont Southampton kids can get their fit fix. The Explorer’s Camp has summer programs for children ages 6-13 that are active, fun and educational, including Outdoor Kid’s Fit, Glow in the Dark Trampoline Park, Glow Golf, Fishing Off De Dock, climbing wall, educational beach walks, boogie boarding, beach/snorkeling time and a lighthouse excursion. The folks at the Fairmont are on a mission to create long lasting healthy memories. The program isn’t uptight. Children participate in as little or as much as they like.

JW Marriott Miami Turnberry Resort & Spa, Miami, Florida

You know it’s the golf course where the real deals are made. Give your kids the leg up and expose them to the game early. The JW Marriott hosts the Junior Golf Camp with Ray Boone. Children ages 9-17 can take to the green with PGA Director of Instruction Ray Boone. The two-month camp—divided into six sessions—is all about increasing strategy and ability, while learning fundamental golfing technique in a constructive atmosphere at the resorts’ two, award-winning 18-hole golf courses. What will your kids learn? The program incorporates games and drills that teach the rudiments of golf, including the full swing, short game, rules, sportsmanship and etiquette. Students will compete against each other daily in tournaments. The kids will love all the technology that tracks and records 3D characteristics of the golf ball in motion. Expect your child to up their game. There’s also complimentary programming every day for 5-12-year-olds like the GETMOVING Fitness classes.

Great Wolf Lodge, Poconos, Pennsylvania

Great Wolf Lodges offer activities like Yoga Tails, daily morning yoga for the kids, Wolfercize exercise programs, think jazzercise for kids, and morning Nature Walks for kids and adults to explore the areas outside around the lodges. There is also hiking, biking and swimming.

Martinhal Sports Academy, Martinhal Sagres Beach Family Resort Hotel, Sagres, Portugal

There are sports academies for tennis (ages 4-14), soccer (for ages 4-12) and swimming, (ages 2-9). Students are grouped by age and ability. In addition to the academies, there are clubs for teens and tweens that feature biking, windsurfing, surfing and diving. There’s no need for parents to be jealous. There is an abundance of action available for them, be it biking, surfing, paddle boarding, golf, horseback riding, tennis, kayaking, walking tours and more.
