Dance Calendar March 2018

Explore dance in many forms all around New York this month! First up is the fast growing series “Work Up 4.0,” a platform for emerging artists at Gibney Dance: Agnes Varis Performing Arts Center (March 9-March 17). Divided into three sections and three shared weekends, this season’s lineup features Ainesh Madan, Evelyn Lilian Sanchez Narvaez and Marion Spencer (Work Up 4.1, March 2-March 3); Babay L. Angles, J. Bouey and Rourou Ye (Work Up 4.2, March 9-March 10); and Melanie Greene, Summer Minerva and EmmaGrace Skove-Epes (Work Up 4.3, March 16-March 17). The series also incorporates a gallery exhibition by the artists and post-performance receptions each Friday and post-performance discussions with the artists each Saturday. Feb. 28-March 24—The series “Dancing Platform Praying Grounds: Blackness, Churches and Downtown Dance,” by guest curator Reggie Wilson for the Danspace Project’s Platform 2018, continues with participating dance artists Same As Sister/Briana Brown-Tipley and Hilary Brown, Keely Garfield, Beth Gill, Jonathan Gonzalez, Miguel Gutierrez, Angie Pittman, Edisa Weeks and Ni’Ja Whitson. March 9-March 11—The Flamenco Festival returns to New York with some of Spain’s celebrated dancers and musicians. The 2018 Flamenco Festival line-up includes performances by Ballet Nacional de España, Compañía Eva Yerbabuena and Ballet Flamenco Jesús Carmona. For more information, visit

March 15-March 18—The annual event that celebrates dance and dancers in many forms, “From the Horse’s Mouth,” returns to begin its 20th anniversary year with “A Footnote in Ballet History?” a special program honoring Magda Saleh, prima ballerina of Egypt. More than 30 dancers, musicians, historians and choreographers will share stories, memories, anecdotes and dance in celebration of Saleh’s service to the field. March 14-March 25—Ailey II returns to their home, the Ailey Citigroup Theater for their 2018 season with premieres by Darrell Grand Moultrie (“Road to One”), Juel D. March 23-March 24—As part of the Harkness Dance Festival at the 92nd Street Y, Urban Bush Women bring their ongoing dance-conversation work, “Hair Parties,” “an event that combines excerpts of ‘Hair & Other Stories’ with dialogue practice using the deceptively simple topic of HAIR as the organizing principle…” notes the release. March 27-April 1—As one of the initiatives at the newly opened Performance Space New York in the Mabou Mines theater, works by Tariq Al-Sabir, Tamar-kali, Davalois Fearon and Sanaz Ghajar will be presented at the inaugural SUITE/Space artists’ series titled “Mabou Mines.” The series promises to support artists who reflect New York City’s rich cultural landscape and provides artistic advisement, development support, rehearsal space and opportunities for public performance. For more information, visit
