By now, it would seem I just cannot let go of 2017! This piece is my third (and final) reflection on the year that is sure to make another appearance in 2018. It is the restaurants I dined with in 2017. Some of these had just opened and some had been there all the time and I was slow to make the discovery. Either way, now you will know!
In Harlem, Belle Harlem (@BelleHarlemNYC) laid it down in their petite space and that bacon jam and seasonal victuals. Gaudir at Tastings Social took me to Spain with authentic food and a dynamite G&T menu. Sushi Inoue (@SushiInoue) table-omakase was transformative, but I will splurge on the bar omakase next time. Clay’s redesign of the iconic Perk’s was only outdone by the exceptional service and food.
For restaurants outside of Harlem, I must give it up to Babu Ji (@BabuJiNYC) for a mind-blowing meal, especially the infatuating Colonel Tso’s cauliflower; to Tim Ho Wan (@TimHoWanUSA) for world-renowned dim sum with my Fab 5 crew; to Maison Pickle (@MaisonPickle), owner of Jacob’s Pickles, for that whole flounder Florentine and reinvigorating the old Ouest space; and to the master, Danny Meyer, for the new Union Square Café and its unrivaled hospitality and exceptional food. Wow
Brooklyn, stand up! Thank you for finally getting me on the Sahadi’s (@Sahadis) bandwagon. I am jonesing for labne, za’atar flatbreads, pickled garlic, those housemade hand pies, oh, and that house blend coffee. Please have my shopping cart ready!
Brooklyn, thank you also for the Rockaways! Whether taking the new ferry from Wall Street (only if waiting in a line is your jam), or the “iron horse” or you have a good friend with a car, your shores are the move. Special shout-outs to Riis Beach, and all the food vendors who do not half step on serving quality foods by the sea—2018 has got some big shoes to fill.
Happy eating and thanks for reading!
